Digg, The Democracy Is Put In Observation

December 30th, 2006 by WebMatrix · 4 Made Me Smarter

OK, I do digg, but then again I am a non-regular digger. There are several reasons for this.

The Power Of The Masses

Long are the days gone where a digg meant that an article was really read. Today many diggers will scroll down the list and bookmark stories, depending on title and digger.
Or bury the entry. Popular domain names easily become he victim of the bury brigade, eventually banning those domains to eternal blacklisting.
Democratic?
During elections, do I vote for the same persons as my friends do? Probably not, but I will probably digg the same entries as my friends.

The Influence of Top Diggers Is Too High

I am sure some people will not like this, but I agree that digg has changed the algorithm and decreased the influence of the top users algorithm. Obviously top diggers reacted and I even understand their feelings. Last but not least they have shaped digg pretty much, not to speak about all the time they have invested.
But to see the icon of a top digger next to an entry when scrolling down the list, has an almost demagogic influence on many members of digg. Thing which is well explained in Muhammed’s entry here.

Life time ban = Death by hanging

Sorry Muhammed but that thought would be nothing more than a way to game digg.

Digg Is A Chinese Democracy

Blacklisted domains are blacklisted ad vitam eternam, except Digg’s partners (Sorry Muhammed but You are THE Digg source).
There is no democratic system at all if the community is not able to restore a domain in value.
I don’t have the feeling either that the Digg team actually listens to the democracy.

Digg’s Moderation Is Broke

Netscape Navigators have proven their value

Top Diggers should become moderator if they are interested (eventually even renumerated). The Netscape model has proven his value.
A moderator should be allowed to correct typos, correct links and many more. But at the same time moderators should have the power to immediately ban spam entries (close down as Netscape calls it) and to move entries among categories.
Every action of a moderator should be disclosed. Moderator’s submissions should not have any higher status.
Read more about Digg’s moderators at Deep Jive Interests.

Comments Are A Burden

Most of time I can’t leave fast enough after having read the teaser to a story.
Also in the comments moderators should participate and try to keep the atmosphere positive.

Not Digg’s Fault : SERPS should not include Social Bookmarking sites

When using Google or any other search engine I don’t want to land on a social bookmarking site to find a link. But this is not the fault of Digg (or any other social bookmarking site).

And last but not least, I can’t see any story with 2-3 Adsense links to Diggnation anymore.

So when do I digg? When I have read a story and like the story… and don’t forget that I have a digg button in my browser bar. But then again, I didn’t befriend any top users and only have 2 news submitted to the front page… so why should I bother Muhammed?

Ha! You hypocrite!!! You say that you’re a non-regular Digger — but you’ve submitted five Digg Blurbs just in the last week!!

Are you grovelling for approval of the Digg community?!

Would you be that nice also to point out the irregularity in my digg behavior?

I don’t look for, nor need anyone’s approval. Check when I signed up with this nick and look at how regular my digging is compared to my blogging. ;-)

Update : Surely the digg community is not the approval I look for. ;-)
