Truemors Dies On It’s Official Launch : Your Truemor Has Been Censored

May 15th, 2007 by WebMatrix · 13 Made Me Smarter

Truemors, the site slower than digg.com, dies on it’s first official day. The gossip social voting site, Truemors, launched by Guru Guy Kawasaki has officially died already.

Several weeks long the site had been openly beta-testing and today a TC post announced the official start.

What is truemors? Ballocks A soon to be expected heavily monetized site, but also an open site where everyone can post rumors. And they can be voted by site visitors.

Truemors ToS is clear:

The content of the Site is offered for general information, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. The content is unmoderated by the site and reflects the personal opinions of the posters. [emphasis mine]

Unmoderated, of course. Time for some censorbait.
Within little time, but with breaks inbetween I posted several messages, truemors, censorbait.

Truemors will be forgotten before the next PR update. [link]

Truemors censors. [link]

Truemors just died. [link]

As soon as the posters noticed that Truemors censored, real spam messages started to hit Truemors, as can be seen in the screenshot.
Truemors-1

Also notice that the last message, truemors just died still up is. Only some mintues later, the spam was cleared.
Truemors-2

Did I miss something in the second image??? Did Truemors not die???

Not only was the spam cleared, but also criticism. Maybe I should add I that the same message got deleted twice.

Lets visit the link to disappeared truemor.

Human or computer? One of us has slipped up. Or not…we could have intentionally deleted this page for various good reasons.

UNMODERATED???

Poor start.
Bye Truemors.

Update: I wonder how long this will stay up.

[…] I know this is kind of a stretch, but stay with me while I try to pull a couple of threads together from things that are going on right now: We’ve got the launch of Truemors, the Digg-style rumour site that Guy Kawasaki set up — which seems to have been over-run with spam and the equivalent of graffiti (what Second Lifers call “griefing”), and may be burying critical posts. […]

I experienced exactly the same even other people claiming to be me.
But since Guy was really rude i think unless he learns to leave the community alone this site will sink

Please read your policy (see below) and tell me if this is the evil kind of moderation that should be stopped. This is essentially what we do. Why is it okay for you but not for me?

Criticism or praise is off topic for Truemors. The purpose of truemor is to broadcast true rumors, not rants, spam, advertising, or censorbait.

Guy, thanks for hopping by. Difference is that I admit that I moderate. Actually, living in the UK I am legally required to do so.

Where did you see me deny that I moderate? Our About says exactly what we want:

You can read our Terms of Use for more detail, but simply stated we’re not interested in crap. Some crap is easy to recognize: profanity, pornography, bullying, libel, slander, and advertising. (If you see any of this, please email us.) Some is not so easy. Take gossip for example. The best definition that we’ve found of gossip is:

“…evaluative social talk about individuals, usually not present, that arises in the context of social network formation, change, and maintenance…” Rumor Psychology: Social and Organization Approaches by Nicholas DiFonzo and Prashant Bordia.

By contrast, the best definition of “rumor,” also from Rumor Psychology, is:

“…unverified and instrumentally relevant information statements in circulation that arise in contexts of ambiguity, danger, or potential threat and that function to help people make sense and manage risk.”

The content that we want is true rumors that is relevant, helps you make sense of the world, and also possibly entertains you. Gossip, by contrast, is less urgent, less useful, and almost always deals with people’s private lives. In other words, if we wanted gossip, we would have called our site “Truessip” or some such drivel.

So if you were me and 1/2 of the bloggers say that Truemors has junk on it and the other 1/2 says I censor, what would you do?

    Franky,

By the way, living in the UK are you required to print the truth? Truemors didn’t die, and it isn’t dead.

    What’s up with that?

Guy, living in the UK you are somehow required to moderate, as a site owner is held responsible in court for the content, and eventual slander, libel. ;-)

    What would I do?
Nothing else than you : sit back, wait til the storm lays down and Truemors has stabilized itself (which will happen with time and truemorists). And I’d giggle, giggle about all the critics who jumps at the throat of an A-Lister at day 1. ;-)

    Franky,

You are one interesting guy. You drill me, tell the world that my site is dead when it isn’t, and then tell me you agree with me and wish me well?

Guy, isn’t blogging also about having fun?

And as I always say/think : if I spend time writing about something it means that I find the subject interesting enough to write about. If I don’t care, I wouldn’t waste a minute at it.
And actually, I was pretty close to write a follow-up entry Truemors after one week : the drama has setttled.

Wagamama is awesome, we have one here in Brighton too, but I’d surely come to London. :)

[…] Franky says Truemors was stillborn—dead even before launch. Imagine, a web app supposed to have been in the likeness of Digg, user-submission, voting and all. Truemors was heavily hyped up before launch, and then suddenly, the bubble bursts (and quite prematurely, I would say). […]
