...Diatribe Of A Cyber Suicide

a-listers forgetting their informative factor

July 16th, 2006 by WebMatrix · No Shared Ignorance Wisdom

Michael Arrington had his rant. David Krug had his Arrington rant. Both have a longtime history as informative blogs, Techcrunch being one of the most powerful blogs nowadays.

Techcrunch generates probably as much ad money as it has feedreaders. Arrington started working full time for TC and has a very active co-author in the person of Marshall Kirkpatrick. At the same time the quality of TC has gone downhill, mainly due to more and more stupid comments. TC seems to become the new Slashdot and Digg, especially in the comment area.

As where Marshall’s style obviously still needs to grow, Michael has created his fair share of anti-Arrington commenters. If I weren’t that tolerant I would have deleted TC from my feedroll after the PayPerPost entry. I had the same feeling when I read Krug’s post about PayPerPost. None of both posts brought an objective, interesting view on PPP.

Arrington has forgotten the majority of freetime bloggers, among whom a huge percentage dreams of making money with their blog and who will certainly love PPP.
Krug who started his post ranting about Arrington couldn’t really argument anymore why PPP could/would become popular as his rant about Arrington was too heavyweight.
I personally couldn’t care less about PayPerPost, I even didn’t sign up, but two blogs who have/had a high value have become …
TC almost being a cult, and certainly uses his power and often breaks websites, PRBlogger has already lost most of his cult a long time ago. But Krug also writes at several other websites and makes a good living out of this.
Now saying that the blogger using PPP sells his soul certainly is not the way to gain new readers.
Where are we, the readers, left in all this? What is the true, long term value of both blogs for the worldwideweb? Short term they can surely influence the popularity of a website. But long term?

Lets be honest : how many people do know what Zoho is. How many do know the BlogHerald? More mainstream even, how many percent of the bloggers still don’t know flickr?

To resume, guys we really don’t care about A-lister internal rants, no matter how funny they might be. Hell I am one (I declared myself A-lister last night) and who cares about my problems with [soon probably every other A-Lister -just kidding but I will still write what I do think] ? Still, when making a professional presentation somewhere I do forget my own interests and analyze objectively. Even if sometimes it means I do have to admit own errors or use my own errors in a What-not-to-do argumentation.

Time for you guys to start thinking that way (again). All of you A-Listers still need to broaden your audience horizon to really change the web. A much needed change.
So time to also think of the every day blogger who doesn’t know better than traffic exchanges because those bloggers are the money, especially the ones who still fear eCommerce. And they will love PPP.
And how come none of you (A-Listers) covered the (double) sale of a community with 50.000 members? Too small for you?

Sorry if it took me several days to post this entry, but I do not work full time for AIFN. Unless of course some of you would pay me $5000 monthly. Would this mean I will love you? Or should I start with the $25 I do love PayPerPost offer?

Come on, you can do better than that. No need to ask your mother if you are allowed to comment. ;-)
