Today as I logged on and opened my inbox I was surprised, positively surprised. A friend of mine had mailed me his comedy gig and imagine, after 3 years of hard work he is finally going on stage. Stand-up comedy. I always loved it, I even more loved to screw up gigs. Yes I am a bastard like that.
When I was 17 I was in a Dutch jury for improvisation competitions. In Germany I was the hardest critique at the first ‘Open Stage’ Comedy Theater in Cologne. I love comedy. I love good comedy. Boom Chicago Amsterdam hates me. 3 Times I managed it to be picked during an improvisation gig and go on stage. Three times I screwed their gig. Hey you’re good or you suck. You make money, I know the ’scripted guidelines’ in improvisation theater. I don’t follow them. You are funny and make money out of it, I can test how good you really are. But back to my friend.
He sent me his gig and asked for a ‘last minute correction’. Hey I feel flattered. You get 40 fucking minutes on stage and I can play your ghost editor. Thanks dude. No really, I was flattered and immediately recorded his gig on mp3 and fooled a little with it. But at the bottom of the mail there where 2 little PS’es.
Ok I knew what was coming. You wanted to save the best for last smartass. Of course I know you won’t pay me for doing this and of course I know I get a backstage card. I am actually already looking to book a flight for monday. What? You actually don’t want me to come because my critique is TOO hard. Oh and you want a website as well? Hey dude FU k. I would have loved to post a link to his site, but yep one more comedian without a website. Bastard.
3 have made me smarter ↓

I’ve never been to see standup comedy. Now I have to go because it sounds like a good time. Try not to be too hard on your friend. If this is his first time, he must be nervous as all hell. I would pee my pants if I had to get up on stage and be funny.

T. :: yeah maybe it wasn’t that clear. He worked 3 years very hard, mainly having small gigs between 7 and 15 minutes. Now he has half a programm as they tend to say (in Germany). He does a 40 minutes gig. But he has stage experience already. I think he has been around 250 times on different open stages so far.

I.love.comedy. I just fucking LOVE it. But yeah, that was a bastard move on his part, and I’m not talking about your critiquing him.
