You know you want to kill your hoster if after weeks of server problems you finally get another server and everything works fine for 48 hours.
Finally you go to sleep and enjoy some hours of rest. You start dreaming of getting dugg and surviving it.
And then, only some hours later, a VoIP call wakes you up. You could kill the caller, especially when you’re told your domains are down (again).
Several support tickets later your site is up and running again. But not the others.
So what did happen?
During the server move, the hoster has forgotten to remove the zoning file from the old server. Yes, that means that sometimes your ISP will catch the old nameserver for your domains, sending you to a non existing webspace. D’uh.
Sorry about this.
You know that you want to kill your hoster reading this, especially when you flushed your DNS and even changed the host file on your computer but still don’t get redirected to a working site.
It will take 24 to 48 hours before the DNS propagates yadda yadda … *yawns*
Whatevah.
Find after the jump how to solve the problem if you can’t reach your site.
Or what to do if you’ve just bought a domain and are waiting for the DNS to propagate. But you don’t want to wait.
How to change the IP host file
Open Windows Explorer and browse to
C:\Windows\system 32\driver\etc
Open the hosts file in notepad and add following line under 127.0.0.1
serverIP yoururl
and save the file.12
How to flush DNS3
Open the command prompt
Start ---> Run ---> cmd + [Enter]
and type following line
ipconfig /flushdns + [Enter]12
Probably you will have to reboot your computer before the new settings take place.
This obviously also works if you’ve just created/bought a new domain and are waiting for the DNS to propagate. ;-)
1 If you run any kind of *NIX, you are supposed to know how to do this. :-P
2 If you run a Mac, return to your Photoshop please.
3 Do not forget you have done this if your site ever moves to another location/server as this will override the DNS of your ISP and always send you to set IP for configured domain. I advice to remove this line again after some days when you can reach your site normally again.

Come on, you can do better than that. No need to ask your mother if you are allowed to comment. ;-)
