Quickie : Make Firefox as Fast as Opera

January 7th, 2007 by WebMatrix · 2 Made Me Smarter

Sorry, it is busy in “Da Wannabe Famous House”, but the situation will (hopefully) be better next weekend, and several entries have already been semi-drafted1.
Today only a quick and classic tip to make your Firefox as fast as the Opera browser is, no matter how many extensions you have installed.

Type in the address bar about:config.
Type pipelining in the filter bar.
Double-click on network.http.pipelining to set its value to TRUE.
Double-click on network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and change its value to 12 or more if you have broadband.

If your computer doesn’t have that much of memory and you regularly have many tabs open, use a lower value.
If you use the coComment extension for FF your browser will always be slow add 2 more.
You can experiment with higher settings until you have found the best setting for your config.
I use 24.

You’ll see, suddenly FF is even faster than Opera is. ;-)

1 This doesn’t mean I won’t be posting. ;-)

That’s helpful. I normally have 5-7 tabs open at once, but I’ll take any speed I can get.
