Sometimes I help people with plug-ins for their WP blog, so here a first list of the Wordpress plug-ins I regularly use.
- Dr. Dave SpamKarma.
Some people use Askimet, the standard spam plug-in for WP. Due to his nature, developped by a commercial company I don’t use it since the past has learned me that open source licenses change sometimes very fast.
SpamKarma is easy to install and cann easily be customized. - Bad Behavior.
I use Bad Behavior in combination with SpamKarma to prevent bots viewing the site. - Semiologic DoFollow.
Spambots are not written to respect robots.txt and other rules like nofollow. They will visit your site and save every email address they find. Besides that nofollow has negative influences on the PageRank of regular commenters. - Subscribe to comments.
I love spamming your inbox. No honestly I like keeping track easily of followup comments. - Extended Life Archives.
An ajaxified archives plug-in. I do love this way to browse through blogs. - Ultimate Tag Warrior.
It took me a long time to get used to tags, but nowadays I really like tags and will even drop the categories in the new AIFN-version. Categories will only be used anymore as a display function. Besides that together with Extended Life Archives tags allow me to offer a better search/archive function than categories do. - Inline Ajax Comments.
I like this plug-in since it offers the comments without having to refresh the page. Me love some AJAX. - Fancy TooltipsInline Ajax Comments.
Having been a security specialist I will always hoover a link and see where it points at before clicking it. Wonder why I never got phished or spoofed? Tooltips make the links visible, even in Internet Sucking Explorer. - Feedstats.
WP doesn’t offer any statistics. Feedstats shows how many people read your feeds daily. - Live Comment Preview.
I’ve heard some people use the preview effectively. I might soon use another version for the preview function. - Lightbox Plug-in.
Perfect to display pictures without sending the visitors to a new site or open a new tab/window. Ajaxified as well.
I use several other plug-ins as well, but those are my favourite ones.

ahhh, dr. Franky :) but question: if you keep bots from viewing the site, does that include the crawlers as well? like the ones I see in my stats at feedburner? are these “bad” bots? (excuse me for my ignorance once again).

swan, no spam bots most of time don’t send any referrers, just like lots of anonymous proxies. Browsers and other (good) bots send referrers which can be recognized by the server/stats. All bots sending referrers are allowed. There is a better explanation for how Bad Behavior works at their site, this is only the resume.
